Transforming Paper

So I just saw a video on metacafe showing how to make this cool transforming star thing. So I went and made it.

Here's the process.

The construction

The first step was to mark up a piece of card like this:

If you can't see in the horrible ipod quality photo, the whole thing is 12 x 24, the 12cm side is broken up in segments 3cm, 4cm and 5cm. Then each strip of this is 3cm (Making 8 strips along the 24cm length).

The next step was to cut them out in strips, each strip being 3x12.

The next step was to fold each strip up into little triangles and tape them up (folding along the lines that should be there)

Next you tape them together in groups of 2 like arranged above, only on the large side in a way that it can turn.

Next you connect the groups of two together (making two separate things of 4)

This is done on the 3cm side.

The next step is to bring the two long pieces together like:

and tape the two together, also on the 3cm side.

You should end up with something looking like this:

What it can do
well, it can do these and a bunch more shapes. It's just fun to move it around.

Also it seems that bloggers editor is horrible with arranging images side by side.

(I apologize for the horrible image quality, I used my ipod camera for this.)

And remember, if this guide confuses you at all, just check out the video here.

  31. Oh, this is awesome! Too bad my fingers are too stupid to even cut a straight line, so I'd never really be able to make something nice like this. It's simple, but I think it'd still come out messed up for me.

  36. Looks awesome Claude - Shame I will never have the time or patience to construct it hahaha. But man, didn't expect it to be so cool while I was watching the guy construct it! Wonder how fragile it is..

  37. @Mike, I can attest that it's actually very strong and durable. That may be due to the fact that I made mine with card but even my worries about the tape coming undone were shown up.

I've been fiddling with it pretty consistently and it doesn't look like it will break any time soon.
